Coal India & HURL Eye Coal-to-Urea Plant in Jharkhand

Coal India has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan (HURL) to evaluate the establishment of a coal gasification-based urea production plant in Jharkhand.

Designed to curb import dependency through clean coal gasification, the initiative underscores Coal India’s diversification into the value-added chemical and fertilizer sectors. The project brings together Coal India’s core coal supply capabilities and HURL’s established downstream manufacturing expertise. Coal India currently maintains a 30.10% equity stake in the joint venture.
